THE FAQs

Does SOD MASTERS® offer a 30 day warranty?

SOD MASTERS® does not offer a 30-day warranty for many reasons. The first reason is because a 30-day warranty is a trick to get customers to feel safe (in our opinion). If you notice, all sod companies who offer a 30-day warranty also state guidelines after each warranty “As long as you follow our watering guide”, “When post care instructions are followed”. The list goes on forever, but it’s simply a way to avoid the warranty. SOD MASTERS® rather get to the point. If you think about it, fresh sod from a sod farm should last at least 30 days as long as it is receiving some amount of water and wasn’t laid on concrete. SOD MASTERS® is not responsible after the sod is dropped off; however, we will leave detailed instructions to help all our valued clients make sure their sod will last forever! If our clients have trouble with their sod after 1 week, 30 days, 4 months, 2 years etc…. we will still take the time to come out and discuss the problem at hand and find a solution.

What is a Soil Test? Is a Soil Test necessary?

No matter where you live in the beautiful USA, the pH and nutrient characteristics of our soils vary greatly. The ability of the soil to provide nutrition to a plant is critical to the overall health of a plant.  When a soil is unable to provide nutrients in the proper amounts, it can lead to reduced plant strength/health and increased susceptibility to damage from disease, insects, drought and other conditions. Not what your new sod wants to face after we deliver.

Routine soil testing is a great tool to help point out nutrient deficiencies and surpluses, soil pH, and Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC).  Understanding the test results allows for the selection of the appropriate fertilizer or amendments to help correct deficiencies and other problems to optimize the uptake of fertilizer nutrients by the plant.

How do I calculate the amount of sod I need?

We need to know the total amount of area you are sodding.  A few measuring samples are as follows:

  • Square/Rectangle: Area = Length x Width

  • Circle: Area = 3.14 x r²

  • Triangle: Area = Base x Height

How do I choose a sod installation contractor?

When deciding on a contractor, you should be wary of those who offer to charge you significantly less than others.  Low bidders may not be licensed or insured and may often use cost-cutting techniques that can jeopardize your effort to have a long lasting, beautiful healthy lawn. When deciding on a contractor, you should be wary of those who offer to charge you significantly less than others.  Low bidders may not be licensed or insured and may often use cost-cutting techniques that can jeopardize your effort to have a long lasting, beautiful healthy lawn.

What type of sod should I purchase?

Customers may purchase any type of sod they desire.  However, certain types of sod will do better in certain areas, depending upon location and other elements.

I've just installed my new sod. How often should I water?

Proper watering of sod is essential for the root establishment.  The day of installation, give your new sod at least 2 to 3 cm. (1 in.) of water within 30 minutes of installation.  From day two on, keep your sod and soil moist throughout the day.  The roots are short so the sod cannot withstand large amounts of water at a single time.  Other than the first day, the ground under the sod should never be soggy.  Usually watering four to six times during the day for approximately five to six minutes each cycle, is required until root establishment has begun on your sod.  Root establishment will usually begin within ten to fourteen days.

Can I walk on my new sod Immediately?

It is recommended to stay off your new sod until the first mowing.  During the spring, summer and fall months, it is recommended to wait 14 days until you should walk on your new sod.  In the winter months, it is recommended to wait a little longer, about 14-21 days. This time period allows the roots to be established.

What is the best time of day to water my sod?

The best time to water your new sod is early morning or early evening.  Watering at these times allows for less evaporation, less run-off, and greater soil penetration. During the first ten to fourteen days:

During hot & dry periods - Water your lawn 2 times daily AM & PM (5:30AM - 3:30PM)
During cooler & inclement weather - Water your lawn 1 time daily in early AM.
15 minutes spray zones - 30 minutes rotor type
After 10 to 14 days - set irrigation to run once daily, three (3) time per week.
